Levers for the agroecological transition of tropical agriculture

Abstract To promote greater sustainability in agriculture, development of agroecology is increasingly being invoked. What are the conditions for establishing agroecological production tropical regions? Based upon case studies several areas, we provide here some answers to this question. We review “pillars” (i.e. principles) and “implementation levers” (i.e., tools) agroecology. identify three main pillars: (1) mobilization management ecological processes sustainable resilience agroecosystems; (2) interactions between technical, social, environmental, institutional components agroecosystems a holistic approach agroecology; (3) scaling up that takes place with plurality actions pathways at different organization levels rather than an increase resources replication standardized technical processes. implement these pillars, 11 bio-technical, cognitive, socio-political, organizational levers. Bio-technical levers include those mobilizing complementarity crop species optimize natural use, functional biodiversity plot scale regulation pests diseases, managing landscape territorial scales, (4) increasing efficiency biogeochemical cycles, (5) renewing targets genetic improvement. Cognitive, (6) political action national global level, (7) local level support producers, (8) (9) marketing new agri-chains, (10) methods evaluating systems, (11) recognition values gender generation within families other organisational levels. This paper provides overall orientation transition agriculture also considers socio-political context underlies transition.
